Segundo & Belmira – Shipibo Shamans

We are proud to be working with indigenous Shipibo shaman Segundo Pangoza Chani and his wife Belmira Chavez Fernandez, both powerful and loving healers. Segundo is 59 years old and has been working with the medicine for over 40 years, since he was 16. He offers a wealth of experience felt through his powerful, deeply grounded healing. Belmira has been working with the medicine for many years going to the root of issues, with a history in healing feminine issues, also practicing indigenous midwifery since her teens.

The Shipibo tradition is known as the best preserved and profound of the indigenous cultures that use Ayahuasca, hence their reputation as masters of the medicine among the indigenous people of the Amazon.

Segundo and Belmira assist you personally to understand your particular needs, they are spiritual doctors working in the physical and spiritual realms. They are deeply respectful in their way of connecting to and sharing the medicine – the dietas they have completed follow a long held ancestral path. They perform sublime ceremonies, guiding and supporting with strength, love and humility.

“With Gaia Tree you will definitely feel safe, get all the support you need throughout the whole journey, all your questions will be answered and you will have an experience of a life time. Segundo and Belmira are beautiful people and very good Shamans. You won’t be able to miss their grounded and strong spirit. ” – Jana Bene

“I’m grateful to Gaia Tree for providing me just what I was looking for, it was important for me to drink Ayahuasca in a safe and loving environment and I wanted to be immersed in the jungle away from the madness of the outside world. And as an added bonus, I was hoping to connect with like minded folk from around the world and I surely wasn’t disappointed on any counts. ” – Nancy, Canada

Experience the real Amazon jungle

Gaia Tree Center is located in primary Amazon rainforest, which means we can give you a real Amazon jungle experience unlike our old location and most other retreat centers, which are typically located close to the city in secondary rainforest – often surrounded by roads, farms or other types of land development.

During the retreat, we’ll take you for a day trip into the rainforest and then a boat ride with our Amazon bushman guide where you may see sloths, monkeys, snakes, spiders and more. You’ll also be introduced to the rich plant medicine traditions of the jungle on these walks.  It doesn’t end there, you get the chance to go on a night-walk to experience real jungle nightlife! This brief video give s a little taste of one of our jungle adventures.

Detoxing, Purging & Cleansing

Purging and cleansing play a fundamental role in Amazonian shamanic healing traditions. Ayahuasca is an effective medicine because it is purgative meaning that it usually (but not always) causes you to purge or vomit during the experience. This purge is obvious on a physical layer, more importantly you release unhealthy mental and emotional energies that you may have been carrying. For many they are related to difficult experiences in your life such as emotional wounds, abuse, relationship difficulties and depression. We create a safe, supportive space at Gaia Tree to aid your release process in every way.
For many, by the end of the retreat you will feel like a new person, fully cleansed of many of the negative and harmful toxins in your body, be they physical or emotional toxins.

Who Should Attend

Ayahuasca can be a challenging process for many – this with 5 ceremonies over 7 nights is an intense retreat and it is not aimed at people who are simply looking for a new experience or to check something off their bucket list. It’s a loving family space at Gaia to support your process, there are children and animals running around so you’ll feel welcome in the space. We’ve seen from our own experience over the years that working with individuals significantly aids the personal journey so we limit the group size to ensure you have the personal care and attention you need from our shamans and facilitators. Some centers hold ceremonies with groups of 25-30 participants, our focus is on deep personal work with smaller groups – allowing the shaman to work in a way closely aligned with their ancestral path.

Our center is free from distractions, minimal use of electrical devices, there no internet or telephone signal – so you’ll be able to direct all your energy into your process with ayahuasca and really enjoy the space in the jungle.

If you enjoy the pleasures of life and being deeply connected with ancient healers in a real jungle environment then this retreat is ideal for you.

We provide a traditional setting for connecting with Mother Ayahuasca and we deeply respect the ancestral paths our shaman follow in sharing their healing practices with you. To complement this, we offer some of the  most effective means to help integrate your experience. We share from a rich understanding of the inner dimensions through holistic approaches of transformation from the East, including Indian kundalini tantra meditation, Qi Kung, Yoga, Osho meditative therapies and more. Rest assured we can help you on your journey in any way you need.

Many of our guests have commented in the past that there is a family environment at Gaia Tree, so if you like the idea of connecting with a small group of like-hearted souls on this profound journey – this retreat is for you and we look forward to welcoming you to our Gaia family.

We offer personal support after the retreat to help your integration of these profound experiences, so if you need anything we’re here for you.

“I am SO glad I chose Gaiatree for my traditional healing ceremonies. Having two shamans gave us a balanced feminine/masculine energy mix and twice as long exposure to their powerful sound ceremonies. Since they are husband and wife their energies are infused with love. The simplicity of the tambo and grounds suited me, I love the deep nature connection and ‘roughing ‘ it. Our guides were caring, considerate, attentive and inclusive. I felt totally safe and protected. ” – Annie S.

Your accommodation will be in a typical lodge setting looking into the jungle, where you can sometimes see the animals feeding in the morning. You’ll be in a large jungle cabin room sharing with up to 3 others, each guest will have their own double bed. The cabin is partitioned so that you will still have total privacy with fabulous views of the surrounding rainforest. See our facilities page for more info and photos. This makes an ideal setting whether you’re a solo participant or coming with friends.

Our Ayahuasca

The ayahuasca we share is among the best you will find, Segundo prepares the medicine in a ceremony following traditional Shipibo rituals. The ayahuasca vine in the area around Pucallpa where he is from, is widely regarded as being consistently stronger than others around Iquitos. The energy and intention of the ayahusquero cooking the medicine is known to significantly affect the journey, hence Segundo personally cooks the ayahusaca you drink. We only use ayahuascca, chacruna in our medicine brews, some maestroes are known to use Toe (datura) to trigger stronger visions – we absolutely will not use these plants as the side effects can be extremely dangerous and disorientating for the individual.
We’re pleased to assure the integrity, quality and source of our Ayahuasca brew – we know Segundo personally cooks everything we share at Gaia Tree.

“This is the place for you who are looking for simplicity, silence and lots of space for body, mind and soul. Nothing that distracts you except your own mind 🙂 The people working there to create the best experience for you are generous, kind, full of laughter and very present. You feel very safe and very good taken care of and there is always someone to talk to and share your thoughts with. A very allowing and joyful atmosphere.” – Carina

Community Outreach & Support

Gaia Tree exists to help raise consciousness of the people we serve, we understand we’re part of a larger movement and accept our roles in raising awareness of how people live in other parts of the world.
We also understand we have a personal responsibility to play an active role in supporting those who live around us. So, we like to do our part by employing as many local staff and workers from the local communities and getting involved in local projects connected to the local community. The center is located in the upper Amazon basin, a place where economic opportunities, healthcare standards and education standards are not the same as in the Western countries where most of our guests come from, so we also like to give guests the opportunity to give back.

During each retreat, you’ll have the opportunity to support local community as we visit the local village where you can purchase crafts and textiles made by the local women. Belmira also brings handmade garments to support the women of her remote village community.
